When Long Desk For 2 Isn’t Worth the Money

If you're shopping for a long desk for 2, you've probably realized that most listings are vague about what 'fits two people' actually means. I learned the hard way that a 60-inch desk isn't automatically a two-person desk. Mine was 60 inches wide and 24 inches deep, and by week two, my partner and I were constantly elbowing each other. The monitor arms didn't help. So if you're looking for a long desk for 2, here's what I measured after I got burned — so you don't have to.

Width: Don't Trust the Word 'Double'

Every manufacturer calls a 55-inch desk a 'double desk.' It's not. For two people working side by side, each person needs at least 30 inches of width if they're using a monitor and keyboard, and that's the minimum. A 50-inch desk gives you 25 inches each — that's narrower than a standard student desk. If you're both using laptops, you might get away with it, but add a mouse and a coffee mug, and you're playing bumper cars. I'd say go 65 inches or wider. My current desk is 72 inches, and it's the first one that doesn't feel like a shared workspace claustrophobic social experiment. I Bought a New Desk Without Measuring My Files — I should have applied that same logic here.

Depth: 24 Inches Is a Trap

Most desks under $300 are 24 inches deep. That's fine for a laptop, but if you're using a monitor on an arm, you'll want at least 30 inches. Why? Because a monitor arm clamps to the back edge, and if the desk is too shallow, the screen ends up almost in your face. I measured my current setup: my 27-inch monitor sits 26 inches from my eyes at rest. With a 24-inch depth, I had to push the keyboard back to avoid staring at pixels. So if you're considering a long desk for 2, measure your actual setup: take the depth of your monitor's footprint, add 8 inches for a keyboard tray or space in front, and that's your minimum. 30 inches deep is the sweet spot. Two people with monitors and keyboards need that extra 6 inches or you'll both be leaning back to see the screen.

Leg Clearance: What the Photos Don't Show

The third measurement that nobody mentions is leg room. I bought a desk with a center support beam and a drawer unit in the middle. Both of us had to angle our legs to avoid kicking the beam. That got old fast. When you're shopping, look for desks with an open front or two separate leg zones. If a long desk for 2 has a central drawer column, plan for it. I ended up returning a 68-inch desk because the beam left each of us with 12 inches of leg space. That's not enough. Measure from the floor to the underside of the desk — you need at least 28 inches of clearance for a standard chair. And measure between the legs: each person should get at least 24 inches of unobstructed floor. If the desk has a modesty panel, subtract that from your leg space.

The Real Test: No Shared Surface in the Middle

A long desk for 2 looks great in a showroom, but in real life, you'll end up with a shared no-man's land in the middle for paperwork, phones, and that stray wire. That actually worked in my favor — we both use the middle for a shared lamp and a plant. But if you're planning to divide the desk with a monitor stand, don't. My advice: buy a desk mat that covers the entire surface, so you both get a unified area and you can see where 'your side' ends. That's a practical fix, but the real test is this: if you can both reach the middle without bumping elbows, you've got a winner.

One Thing to Do Right Now

Before you even look at desks, take a tape measure and mark out the width and depth on the floor with painter's tape. Sit in your chairs and mimic your work position. If you can't both reach your keyboards without touching, you just saved yourself a return trip. Then look at the specs. Ignore the 'double' label and focus on numbers: at least 65 inches wide, 30 inches deep, and no central leg obstruction. If a desk doesn't list those, ask the seller. If they can't answer, that's your sign to move on. I Bought a Folding Desk for Work From Home and It Taught Me a Lesson was my first mistake — I bought without measuring. Don't be like me.
