36 Inch Desk IKEA: The Size I Got Wrong Before I Measured Right

I bought a 36 inch IKEA desk without measuring my chair. That was the mistake. The desk itself was fine — solid, cheap, easy to assemble. But with my chair's armrests, I couldn't pull in close enough to type comfortably. I ended up leaning forward, which killed my shoulders within a week.

Here's the thing: a 36 inch depth (that's front to back) is common for IKEA desks like the MICKE or LINNMON/ALEX combos. But what you really need to check is the clearance between the desk bottom and your chair armrests when fully slid under.

What Actually Fits Under a 36-Inch Desk

IKEA lists desk dimensions, but not the under-desk height. For example, the MICKE desk is 28 3/4 inches high, and the clearance from floor to underside is about 27 inches. My chair's armrests sit at 28 inches. So they don't fit underneath. That's the number that mattered, and I didn't measure it.

If you're looking at a 36 inch IKEA desk, bring a tape measure to the store or check the spec sheet. Compare the underside height to your chair's armrest height. If your armrests are even an inch too tall, you'll either lower the chair (bad for your knees) or just deal with it (bad for your back).

Depth vs. Width: Don't Confuse Them

When I say 36 inch, I mean depth. Some IKEA desks are 36 inches wide but only 23 inches deep — that's a different beast. For a single monitor and a keyboard, 23 inches of depth is fine. But if you plan on using a laptop stand, a desk lamp, and paper, you'll want closer to 30 inches. My mistake was assuming all 36s are the same.

The Fix: Measure in Inches, Not Feelings

After the armrest fiasco, I returned the desk and got a deeper one. Before I bought it, I measured three things: the chair armrest height, the desk underside height, and the space between the wall and my bed. The last one was key — my room is small, and I had no room for a bigger desk. So I had to adjust the chair instead. I went with a chair without armrests. Problem solved.

If you're stuck with a 36 inch IKEA desk and have armrest issues, consider swapping the chair first. It's cheaper than a new desk. Or you can try a keyboard tray that attaches under the desk, but those are a pain to install on IKEA's particleboard.

A Few More Numbers That Matter

The desk depth isn't the only thing. Check the weight capacity: IKEA's MICKE holds about 110 lbs, which is fine for a monitor and laptop. The LINNMON tabletop with ALEX drawers can handle a bit more, but the legs are weaker than they look. I had a 17-inch monitor plus a laptop and a stack of books, and it held fine.

Also, don't ignore the leg shape. Some IKEA desks have legs that angle outward, which means the actual footprint is larger than the top. If you have 39 inches between the wall and your bed, a 36-inch top might still fit, but the legs could brush against the bed. I measured that too.

If you're still unsure, IKEA's return policy is forgiving — 365 days. I used it. But it's better to measure twice.

What I wish I'd done first: measure the chair. That's it. Everything else fell into place after.
