Tube Christmas Lights: Why the 3/4-Inch Rule Saves Most Setups

Lights should be the easiest part of your outdoor setup. But tube Christmas lights break that promise.

I'm not complaining about the look—tube lights have that clean, uninterrupted glow over your roofline, no missing bulbs, no wiring chaos. They just take a little math before you buy. The good news is, with one measurement and a few numbers, you can plan this out and actually enjoy it. I wrote this after hanging two sets myself, swapping wrong types, and re-measuring everything. It's not the whole encyclopedia of tube lights, but it's what I needed.

The big gotcha: they measure from the first bulb to the last

Tube lights are long flexible strips with spots where the wire enters and exits a clear or frosted tube. The product length usually includes the tube only, not the lead-in wire. That's what trips people up. I bought a 20-foot set, but got home and found the lead-in was four feet, so the tube itself was only 16. Fine if you measure first, less fine when you're on a ladder.

The fix? Measure the clip-to-clip spacing where you plan to hang them. Then subtract the lead-in length from the total picture. Assume the actual tube is that number. For my front porch, that meant the provided lead-in ate about 18 inches of my total run, so I swapped to a set with a longer lead-in before I hung it.

Most indoor lights are close to half an inch wide. Square ones are about 0.35 inches. The clip slots inside those. But the exterior-rated ones with thicker casings are closer to three-quarters of an inch, sometimes a bit more. And that's where the trouble starts.

Go up to a one-inch or larger slot, and your clips might not close properly or grip well. I had a two-inch tall slot on an older anchor, and my three-quarter inch tube rattled around, slid out during a windy week, and stayed out. Didn't show up until I looked at the roofline at night and saw a dangling loop.

The easiest fix if you already have bigger slots: slide a few zip ties over the tube and around the anchor slot. It's cheap, invisible from the street, and doesn't harm the casing.

Plus being transparent, they do share a real weakness: plastic casings get brittle outdoors. Stretch or twist them excessively and you'll see cracks at the ends after a couple of seasons. My first set of cheap double-tube lights lasted one winter, developed hairline cracks at the caps, and water got in. Second set, I bought a slightly more expensive fixture, and the second winter it's holding up fine.

The bulbs themselves are sealed, but the gap at each cap is where the trouble starts. I'd lean toward a set rated for exterior use even if you hang them under a covered porch, because humidity gets everywhere.

Also, if you're using tubes with two or even three bulbs per channel, be careful at joints. The channels over clips that get stress, or the caps on bend points, are the first things to go. Most failures I've seen—about three out of four across my and friends' sets—were at or near a cap or a join.

Some rigs let you replace the entire tube, and a few let you fix the connector. If you're looking at a set where the tubes are sealed in a single spool, and say “replacement bulbs” but not “replacement tube,” expect to just buy whole new runs when one joint fails.

Connector style matters more than people think. Friction-fit connectors are easier to work with, but they wiggle a bit, you can see flicker if you move one. Snap-lock connectors are more stable but snug, tougher to service if you need a replacement.The heat output is minimal for a few tips here or there. I had a plastic downspout on the end of a run where a clip was rested against it the whole season. Still not melted.

Shade color matters too. Light tint shifts when you pile up bundled globes, so you need fewer fixtures for a warm white glow. I started with warm white and got the cozy effect I was after. One friend bought pure white and thinks it looks like a hospital.

All right, here's the concrete set of steps to avoid my failures, with the numbers to bring to the store.

You can check your connection slot for round tubes first. Find a paper clip that’s 18-gauge or a bit bigger, slip it into the slot, and then measure the gap. If it starts to tighten around a 14-gauge but passes a 20-gauge, half-inch is the fit.

The price per foot for these run, for a budget set, from about 30 cents to a dollar plus, with mid-priced around 60–80 cents a gallon. The premium sets cost more due to brand and frame quality—tape worth mention—while two-spool cheap Chinese wire sets are often the cheap ones. I bought my trial set from the hardware aisle, and it was fine. Ordering online is fine too, but measure first, because the images of tubes don’t usually state clip size, I had to open the package and take a ruler in the store.

One ruler does the entire product aisle. Write down the space where the light goes in. I paste a shallow framing ruler to the lip of my clipboard.

Then pick how many feet you plan to light. Don’t just add together product lengths, because the first clip has to straddle a corner, adding 4 inches, and each straight run has a slight sag, so you want 8% reality factor. I round up.

After lights are in place, work over the aluminum tape first

If your clips are too long on the near side, cut the aluminum tape at the zip tie and start over. That’s one thing I skip—electrical tape ends the zip tie job; I use a knife to trim a bit, but if it lets go it’s weak.

The good test is to walk out forty feet at dusk. If you see flicker, first connector is usually the culprit. If you see a yellow shift, that's on the string per circuit.

What’s next? Go measure the distances, then test drive on drywall with painter's tape. That pins the base of your layout, before you crimp anything.

The result: wrapped LED tubes over my front door, along the porch rail, done in one Sunday.

Take a daylight video and convert the measurement

I carried a 25-foot and a shoestring, but really a measuring tape has five times the range of your arms, and it saves re-climbing. Take a daylight video on your phone so you don’t have to dig out the sheet later.

The angles change the distance you need: a 20-foot run that goes around a 40-foot porch or a 12-foot bay needs different numbers in the spreadsheet.

One good way to cut it down: load a blueprint, pick a clip size, measure the total length plus 10%. Then find clips that fit the width—done in three values.

The cost side: I spent the afternoon doing a whole porch. Took two sets, 50 clips, one tube stapler.

Tube fixtures originally sold in three-foot packages. I bought a two-pack. One is still new because I fit. You might watch for double off-brand (glowing plastic with wire strapped to it) that dies from heat.

Every setup takes one night. Less with a helper—my dad worked below handing me clips, done twice as fast.
