Day one, my spindle bed arrived in 11 boxes. Total weight: 214 lbs. I thought I'd prepped. 24 hours in, I realized I'd missed the only decision that actually matters. Don't be me.
The One Decision: Headboard or No Headboard
I picked a headboard-first bed because I liked the look. Big mistake. Spindle beds with headboards have a footboard too. That's six extra inches of wood sticking out. My room is 10' x 12'. The bed fit, but the door barely cleared. Measure the path from the hallway to the bed. Add 6 inches on every side for the spindles. You don't want to bump into them at 3am.
If you have a small room, skip the footboard or get a low-profile one. You'll thank me later.
Slat Spacing: The Real Killer
I bought a bed without slats because I had a box spring. Dumb. Spindle beds often come with slats that are 3 inches apart. My mattress sank halfway through. Check the slat gap against your mattress warranty. Most require 2-3 inches. If the gap is bigger, you'll need a bunkie board or a sheet of plywood.
I skipped the plywood. Now I'm the proud owner of a bowed mattress. Don't be me.
Assembly: Bring a Friend and a Rubber Mallet
Took me 3 hours solo. The spindles fit into holes that are tight. A rubber mallet saves your palms. Also, label every spindle as you pull them out. They're not all the same length. Ask me how I know.
The Finish Issue
Spindles are thin. Paint or stain chips easily during assembly. We bumped one and lost a chunk. Softer woods dent even if you just walk past with a belt. If you're hard on furniture, look for harder wood or a metal frame.
I'm keeping the dent. It's character.
What I'd Do Different
I would've measured my mattress length first. My bed is 70" inside. My mattress is 80". Guess what happened. Yes. The footboard pushed the mattress up against the headboard at an angle. I fixed it with a pool noodle chopped to size. Classy, I know.
The 6-Inch Rule, Summed Up
Add 6 inches to every dimension when you measure the room. That accounts for spindles sticking out, drawer pulls, and your own clumsiness. Ignore it and you'll be trimming door frames or moving a lamp every time you get up at 2am.
Your next step: grab a tape measure and check the room around your bed spot, plus the hallway and door widths. Do it now, not after delivery day.
I also like the bookcase bed first week piece here, because it's the same kind of wake-up call with measurements. And if you're set on a spindle look but aren't sure about the metal vs. wood question, read Iron Beds Queen — Measure This Before You Click Buy. That one saved me from a second mistake.
